The Porsche 968 was produced from 1991 to 1995. A total of 11 241 vehicles left the assembly line. The successor of the Porsche 944 was the last model with the transaxle drive. The Porsche 944 was the economic basis of the car manufacturer in the 1980s, so the declining sales figures of the model were the reason for the development of a new sports car with a new design and as a result the Porsche 968 was developed.

In order to reduce development costs, Porsche focused strongly on the body of the Porsche 944, but changed the front and rear sections. The proportions remained the same, so that only the front view revealed the changes. The newer, better-looking body was also similar to that of the Porsche 928. Especially the headlights, which no longer had a cover, and the front end with integrated bumpers were very reminiscent of the 928. Furthermore, the rear lights were made rounder and designed with optical seams and color filters so that the corresponding areas of the light shine accordingly when flashing and reversing. Compared to the 944, the body of the 968 was much rounder and therefore more streamlined, but the interior remained almost unchanged and was similar to the Porsche 944 S2, which was produced until 1991.

Motor and prices

The drive concept of the transaxle models was also adopted. The engine installed in the front was the same 3-liter in-line four-cylinder engine as in the 944 S2, but with a higher compression ratio and a lighter crankshaft, steel rods and pistons. Furthermore a better engine cooling could be achieved by extending the cooling water channels in the cylinder head. Porsche used the patented hydraulic „VarioCam“ for the first time in the 968. This camshaft adjustment provided a smooth torque curve even at low engine speeds. The 240 hp engine with a torque of 305 Nm was the most powerful four-cylinder engine installed in a production vehicle at that time. The chassis of the 944 S2 was tightened in favour of the higher engine power of the 968 and the brake discs and soft inner linings were ventilated. The Porsche 968 was available with a six-speed manual transmission and a four-speed automatic transmission, which was already used in the Porsche 964.

The Porsche 968 was produced in its production time, in the versions 968, 968 CS, 968 Turbo S and 968 Turbo RS offered. The Turbo RS with an output of 350 HP was however only intended for motorsport, the remaining models were series models. The price development for the 993 is rising, which is why a purchase advice is currently suggested.
