The Porsche 968 was produced from 1991 to 1995. A total of 11 241 vehicles left the assembly line. The successor to the Porsche 944 was the last model with the transaxle drive. The Porsche 944 was the economic foundation of the car manufacturer in the 1980s, so the declining sales of the model were the reason for the development of a new sports car with a new design and as a result the Porsche 968 was developed.

To reduce development costs, Porsche based its design heavily on the body of the Porsche 944, but modified the front and rear sections. The proportions remained the same, so only the front view revealed changes. The newer, more streamlined body additionally resembled that of the Porsche 928. Above all, the headlights, which no longer had a cover, and the nose with integrated bumper were very reminiscent of the 928. Furthermore, the taillights were rounder and designed with optics sets and color filters so that the corresponding areas of the light illuminated accordingly when flashing and reversing. Compared to the 944, the body of the 968 was much rounder and thus more streamlined, but the interior remained virtually unchanged and accordingly resembled the Porsche 944 S2, which was produced until 1991.

Engine and prices

Also adopted was the powertrain concept of the transaxle models. The front-mounted engine was the same 3-liter inline four-cylinder engine as in the 944 S2, but it received increased compression and a lighter crankshaft, steel connecting rods and pistons. Furthermore, better engine cooling was achieved by widening the cooling water channels in the cylinder head. Porsche used the patented hydraulic "VarioCam" for the first time in the 968. This camshaft phasing system provided a smooth torque curve even at low engine speeds. With a torque of 305 Nm, the 240 hp engine was the most powerful four-cylinder engine installed in a production vehicle at the time. The suspension of the 944 S2 was designed to be firmer in favor of the 968's higher engine output, and the brake discs and calipers were internally ventilated. The Porsche 968 was available with a six-speed manual transmission and with a four-speed automatic transmission, which was already used in the Porsche 964.

The Porsche 968 was offered in its production period, in the versions 968, 968 CS, 968 Turbo S and 968 Turbo RS. However, the Turbo RS, with an output of 350 hp, was intended only for motorsport, the remaining models were production models. The price trend for the 968 is rising, which is why a purchase consultation is currently suggested.
