Porsche was planning a 4-door as early as 1995, and the Panamera was finally unveiled at Auto Shanghai in 2009. In terms of driving dynamics, the Panamera did something unprecedented at the time. The design was controversial, but no other luxury-class 4-door was as capable in tight corners as the Panamera when it was launched in the 2010 model year.
Engine and prices
The first models were the Panamera S, 4S and Turbo variants. All three featured a 4.8-liter V8 engine, a 400-horsepower naturally aspirated engine for the S and 4S, and a turbocharged version of the same engine with 500 horsepower for the Turbo. The Panamera received a major update in mid-2014. The S lost its V8 engine, which was replaced by a new, more efficient twin-turbo V6 with 420 hp. From July 2013, the Panamera was available with the new model update that brought some technical changes as well as some visual ones. Porsche added Executive variants with longer wheelbase to the Turbo and Turbo S. The base car's engine was bumped up from 300 to 310 horsepower, while the Turbo and Turbo S now produced 520 and 570 horsepower, respectively. The hybrid Panamera became the S E-Hybrid and gained plug-in capability. The more powerful engine makes it possible to drive at up to 135 km/h in all-electric mode. The supercharged V6 from Audi remained unchanged at 333 hp. The combined output was 416 hp. Apart from the extremely rare Panamera Exclusive series and Edition series, the sedan remained largely unchanged through the 2016 model year.
