Description:
Wheel bearings are the central rolling bearings on vehicles that guide the wheel via the wheel hub in the wheel carrier. In older vehicles, these are often pairs of bearings, for example, deep groove ball bearings and needle bearings; newer models generally have double-row angular contact ball bearings. Open rolling bearings with separate shaft seals were also used in the past. These have now been replaced by lifetime-lubricated bearings thanks to "functional integration." If a wheel bearing is defective, this is usually noticeable by a "thumping" noise when cornering. A firm wiggle of the wheel can also provide information about the condition of the wheel bearings.
