Description:
The top mount forms the connection between the strut and the body and is therefore also called a strut bearing. Before the top mount can be attached to the body, the springs must usually be pre-tensioned and mounted to the shock absorber with the top mount.
A defective top mount is noticeable by creaking or grinding noises.
Due to the considerable installation effort, it is advisable to always replace the top mounts when replacing the shock absorbers or struts, or when performing other work on the suspension.
The top mount stop plates are often heavily rusted/corroded and should always be replaced as well.
