In many cases, the rubber sleeve of the ball joint fails due to the dynamic load and brittleness of the material, allowing dirt and water to enter the ball joint. Support joints should therefore be inspected regularly for play in the joint. The ball joints should always be replaced axle by axle.
You should definitely not continue driving with a defective ball joint as, in the worst case, the ball head can come loose from the joint socket. This means that the wheel can no longer be guided and it can swerve unpredictably.
