Description: The joints on tie rods are subject to wear, which usually starts with a torn boot. Once the grease has been washed out of the axial joint or tie rod end, the ball joint will fail within a few thousand kilometers. Defective rubber sleeves or rod ends are complained about at the TÜV at the latest. Depending on the Porsche model, the tie rods can consist of two or three main components. These include the axial joint as an inner ball joint in front of the steering gear and the so-called tie rod end at the outer end of the tie rod. Sometimes the axial joint and tie rod end are directly connected, as is the case with the 924/944 and 968. Because changing the tie rod always requires a new chassis measurement and adjustment of the toe-in, it is advisable to replace the tie rod completely, depending on the condition. On the 924/944 the tie rods differ in length AND whether they have an internal/external thread on the head. If in doubt, you can also check your thread type and compare it visually. Another difference: With the 1987 model year, the 944 received the so-called “wide axle”. The tie rod ends of cars with power steering and/or wide axles always have an external thread and are screwed onto the rods.
