The stop buffers sit on the piston rod of the shock absorbers. The foam buffers serve as protection against the shock bottoming out when the suspension is fully compressed. As a rule, the old foam is porous and torn so that it no longer fulfills its function. The bellows is the splash protection of the piston rod and its sensitive seal on the shock absorber. Shock absorbers almost always fail because of this shaft seal and the more coarse dirt the piston rod pushes against the shaft seal, the faster both components wear out.
