The ball joint ensures the connection from the wheel carrier to the wishbone and transfers the resulting wheel loads to the cross member.
In many cases, the rubber sleeve of the guide joint fails due to dynamic loading and embrittlement of the material, which can allow dirt and water to enter the ball joint. Therefore, ball joints should be inspected regularly for play in the joint. Ball joints should always be replaced axle by axle.
You should definitely not drive with a defective ball joint, because in the worst case scenario, the ball head can become detached from the joint socket. This means that the wheel is no longer guided and can swing unpredictably.
