Technical data & history of the VW-Porsche 914
The Porsche 914 was developed from 1969 to 1976 in cooperation with VW to be the successor to the Karmann Ghia. This collaboration led to the founding of the “VW-Porsche Vertriebs GmbH” and the infamous nickname “Volksporsche” or “VoPo”. Production was divided: The mass-market models with the four-cylinder engine were manufactured by Volkswagen, while the more powerful six-cylinder models were produced by Porsche. This division is officially identifiable by the production numbers of the vehicles. Engine and Market Positioning: The initial engine options differed significantly in price and performance: Porsche 914/4 (four-cylinder): Used the 1.7-liter engine from the VW 411 E, producing 80 hp. Porsche 914/6 (six-cylinder): Shared the engine with the 911 T, produced 110 hp, and reached 201 km/h. Due to the small price difference to the more powerful 911 Targa models, few buyers opted for the more expensive 914/6. Production of this model was therefore discontinued after 1972. Model update and restoration: In the 1973 model year, many weaknesses were addressed, including the notchy gearbox and the rigid passenger seat. As a replacement for the discontinued six-cylinder engine, the displacement of the four-cylinder was increased to 2.0 liters, now producing 100 hp and achieving similar performance to the 914/6. Prices for the 914 are rising. Whether you're restoring a 914/4 or one of the rare 914/6 : you'll find the right spare parts in the required quality with us.
