Technical specifications & the vision of the Porsche 928

The Porsche 928 was produced from 1977 to 1995 and was originally conceived as the flagship model intended to replace the 911. It was characterized by a combination of a water-cooled front engine and the transaxle drive concept , which had already been used in the 924 and 944.

Innovation and Chassis

  • V8 Engine: The eight-cylinder engine (90° cylinder bank angle) was a completely new development, made of a lightweight aluminum-silicon alloy. The pistons ran directly on the cylinder bore without cylinder liners.
  • Transmission Concept: The engine and transmission were connected by a rigid tube with an internal shaft, which improved ride comfort.
  • Weissach Axle: This groundbreaking rear axle design increased driving stability and made handling more predictable during load changes.

Design and Timeless Modernity

The design, co-created by Harm Lagaay, was highly modern at the time of its presentation and was considered timeless throughout its production run until 1995:

  • Characteristic features include the round, aerodynamic pop-up headlights and the strongly rounded, collision-elastic rear end.
  • Special features such as the recessed C-pillar at the rear and the curved rear windows initially polarized opinions but later served as design inspiration for other vehicle manufacturers.
