Technical specifications & the end of air cooling

The Porsche 993 is the successor to the 964 and is considered the best and most refined 911 with an air-cooled engine. Due to strict regulations on emissions and noise levels, the 993 was the last Porsche to use this traditional concept.

Innovations and design

  • Design: Chief designer Harm Lagaay drew heavily on the original model. The bumpers were more integrated into the body to create a more elegant design.
  • Engine: The 993 was available with an air-cooled six-cylinder boxer engine , whose output ranged from 272 hp (Carrera) to 408 hp (Turbo). The engine featured maintenance-free valve actuation with hydraulic tappets.
  • Chassis/Brakes: The model featured a more powerful braking system, improved ABS , and wider rear tires.

Comfort and Model Variants

The 993 is considered extremely reliable due to its low maintenance costs. In addition to the chassis, interior comfort was also improved, including a more elegant steering wheel with an airbag and redesigned door handles.
