Technical data & innovation of the Porsche 981

The third Boxster generation (981) brought a fundamentally redesigned body. Through the increased use of aluminum and high-strength steel , the vehicle was significantly lighter and larger than its predecessor, the 987.

Engine and Chassis Technology

  • Engines: The 981 was powered by the MA1 flat engine. The base model received a 2.7-liter engine (DFI), while the Boxster S retained the 3.4-liter engine.
  • Transmissions: The 981 was available with a 6-speed manual transmission or a revised 7-speed PDK. Chassis: The chassis and suspension were similar to those of the 911 (with a longer wheelbase and wider track). Optional features such as Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) and the Sport Chrono Package improved driving dynamics. Model variants and production: Production of the Porsche 981 took place in both Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen and at the Karmann plant in Osnabrück. The range was expanded with the GTS, which featured slightly modified bumpers, black paintwork, and increased power output from the 3.4-liter engine.
