The Porsche Boxster 987 (Roadster) was introduced in 2004 and retained the successful mid-engine design, but received a distinctive front end with triangular headlights. It shared many components with the 997generation, which was introduced at the same time.

Innovations and Engine Options

  • Engines (Gen. 1): The engines (2.7L and 3.2L) were carried over from the late 986 and received a performance upgrade. From 2007, the Boxster featured VarioCam Plus, which further increased performance.
  • Gen. 2 Facelift (987.2): From 2009, Porsche introduced a new engine family with Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) for the S version. The 2.9-liter engine replaced the older 2.7-liter base engine.
  • Transmission: The optional Tiptronic automatic transmission was replaced by the modern dual-clutch transmission (PDK) .

Chassis and Safety

To improve driving stability, the 987 was equipped as standard with Porsche Stability Management (PSM) . The chassis components were continuously refined to optimize sporty handling.
