Description:
The thermostat controls the engine oil cooling circuit, thus regulating the cooling of the air-cooled engine. This ensures a short warm-up phase while the engine is fully cooled under load, as the oil is circulated through the oil cooler or cooling coil.
If the thermostat is defective or stuck, the engine will only run on one of the two oil circuits. Unnecessarily long warm-up phases or engine overheating (oil burning) are the result.
It is therefore important to replace a stuck thermostat early so that the engine oil temperature regulation can function properly again.
The thermostat housing is also called the regulator housing in Porsche circles.
