The timing chain with sprockets, tensioning rails, and chain tensioner forms the most important connection between shafts in the engine. It ensures the reliable control of the valves. Mechanical/hydraulic chain tensioners should be regularly serviced to ensure the timing chain is always correctly tensioned. Components such as a tensioning rail, a sprocket, or the chain itself should be replaced at the first signs of wear. This is also noticeable through rattling engine noises.
