Le pastiglie dei freni usurate spesso comportano una riduzione delle prestazioni di frenata e uno spazio di frenata notevolmente più lungo. Si consiglia quindi di sostituire le pastiglie dei freni che hanno un rivestimento residuo inferiore a 2 mm asse per asse. Inoltre, nei sistemi frenanti con contatti di segnalazione, anche questo dovrebbe essere sostituito non appena è stato attivato.
