The dust cover tears over the years and no longer protects the ball joint properly. Like every rubber and plastic part on a vehicle, the bellows / sleeves become porous. To avoid subsequent damage, we recommend replacing the sleeves on both sides as soon as possible. If this is not done, moisture and dirt can damage the ball joint.
