Description:
In VDO instruments, the odometer (not the speedometer) is reduced in two stages, meaning each drive consists of three gears: E1, E2, and E3.

- The driving gearE1is identical in all cases and has 12 teeth.
- The gearE2(double gear) is also identical in all cases, flat on the back (no collar), and has 48x12 teeth.
- The gearE3(double gear) has a collar on the back and exists in nine variations with different numbers of teeth.

For repairs, we recommend replacing all 3 gears:
After removal, please count the teeth of the E3 gear and order the corresponding version from the shop. We have set up separate kits only for definitively known vehicle model-to-gear variant combinations.

Notes:
Buying a used speedometer might save you the cost of repair, but it also carries the risk that the gear will break soon. Storage and cold temperatures, in particular, further damage the gears.
If you have already disassembled the speedometer, it is also advisable to replace the bulbs. These lose a noticeable amount of brightness over the years. They are available at any car dealership or auto parts store.

If you disassemble the speedometer beforehand, please note that the speedometer needle shaft is very delicate. Grasp the speedometer needle in the middle and turn it counterclockwise, pulling gently. Friction is all that holds the needle on the shaft.
