Technical data & history of the Porsche 924

The Porsche 924 was produced from 1975 to 1988 and marked a turning point in Porsche history: It was the first model with a water-cooled front engine and the transaxle drive concept.

Development and Transaxle Concept

  • Origin: Originally planned as a cost-effective sports car project (EA 425) for VW/Audi, development was completed by Porsche itself in 1975 after acquiring the rights.
  • Technology: The transaxle concept connects the front-mounted engine to the gearbox at the rear axle via a rigid shaft, which enabled optimal weight distribution .
  • Design: The design, developed by Harm Lagaay, is characterized by the long, sloping front end and the distinctive pop-up headlights .

Engine and Classification

To reduce manufacturing costs, many components from the VW/Audi range were used (e.g., the 2-liter four-cylinder in-line engine and parts of the chassis). This enabled an attractive base price of just under 23,000 DM.

Although the 924 was not always considered a "fully-fledged" Porsche in its early years due to its lineage, it enjoys increasing recognition today as a youngtimer or classic car – a development that is also reflected in its price trend.
