Technical data and history of the Porsche 944: The Porsche 944 was produced from 1981 to 1991 and was based on the concept of the 924 Carrera. Porsche developed the model to establish a sports car with an independent engine and produced it primarily at the Audi plant in Neckarsulm.

Engine and Chassis

  • Transaxle Concept: The 944 features a transaxle drivetrain, which, by combining the front engine and rear gearbox, ensures balanced weight distribution and neutral handling.
  • Engine: The base model is equipped with a 2.5-literinline four-cylinder engine. Over the course of its production run, the engine's performance (with a catalytic converter) was continuously improved and refined.
  • Model Variants: The 944 was available as the base model, 944S, 944S2, 944 Turbo and 944 Turbo S , which differed in performance and equipment.

Design and Comfort

The body was based on the wide design of the 924 Carrera and finally integrated the fenders into the body. The pop-up headlights and the sunroof remained distinctive features.
