Technical data & the era of water cooling

The Porsche 996 ushered in the fifth generation of the 911 and represented the biggest technical revolution in the series: the switch to a water-cooled six-cylinder boxer engine. This was necessary to comply with stricter fuel consumption and emissions regulations.

Innovations and design

  • Engine: The engine block was significantly more complex. At its market launch, the 3.4-liter engine produced 300 hp; the facelift from 2002 onwards brought a 3.6-liter displacement and 320 hp.
  • Design: The design differed from the classic 911 shape and featured headlights integrated into the fenders (later replaced by clear-glass headlights).
  • Interior: The interior was fundamentally modernized to increase comfort and everyday usability . The repositioned instruments with a digital speedometer were particularly striking.

Everyday usability and classic status

The 996 relied heavily on technical features such as ESP, navigation system and automatic climate control. Thanks to its increased everyday usability and lower price compared to its predecessor, the 996 was a commercial success for Porsche. Today, the 996 is considered a modern classic with stable value.
