Technical data & history of the Porsche Boxster

The Porsche Boxster (name derived from Boxer and Roadster) was developed in response to the booming roadster market and shared many components with the Porsche 996, which was developed at the same time. Innovations and Engines: Concept: The 986 was the first Porsche with a mid-engine layout since the 914. This concept allowed for both a front and a rear trunk, thus increasing the available space. Engines: It started with a 2.5-liter six-cylinder engine (204 hp). At the turn of the millennium, the larger 2.7-liter engines (220 hp) and the top-of-the-line Boxster S with a 3.2-liter engine (252 hp) followed. Production: Some models were produced at Valmet Automotive in Finland, which can be traced using the chassis number (U for Uusikaupunki). Design and everyday usability: Despite the starting price of DM 76,500, the Boxster quickly won over new customers for the brand. The last generation of the 986 received a facelift and a performance boost before the switch to its successor, the 987, thanks to Motronic and VarioCam.
