Technical data & history of the Porsche 968
The Porsche 968 was produced from 1991 to 1995 and replaced the 944, whose declining sales figures necessitated the development of a new sports car. To reduce development costs, the proportions of the 944 were retained, but the front and rear sections were significantly redesigned.
Design and engine innovation
- Design: The body was aerodynamically improved and its shape rounded. The front view with the oval headlights and integrated front end strongly resembles the Porsche 928. Drivetrain: The transaxle concept was retained. The 3-liter inline four-cylinder engine (240 hp) was the most powerful of its time in a production car. VarioCam: In the 968, Porsche used the patented hydraulic camshaft adjustment VarioCam for the first time, which ensured a smooth torque curve. Model variants and chassis: The chassis, adopted from the 944 S2 but made stiffer due to the higher engine output, improved performance. The 968 was available with both a six-speed manual transmission and a four-speed automatic. During its production run, various versions were offered: the base model 968 and the popular, weight-optimized 968 CS (Club Sport). The limited-edition high-performance versions were the 968 Turbo S and the 968 Turbo RS, designed exclusively for motorsport. As the price of the 968 continues to rise, it is a stable classic car. With us you'll find all the necessary spare parts to keep the innovative technology of your 968 in top condition.
