Technical data & the era of water cooling

The Porsche 996 ushered in the fifth generation of the 911 and represented the biggest technical revolution in the series: the switch to a water-cooled six-cylinder boxer engine. This was necessary to comply with stricter fuel consumption and emissions regulations.

Innovations and design

  • Engine: The engine block was significantly more complex. At its market launch, the 3.4-liter engine produced 300 hp; the facelift from 2002 onwards brought a 3.6-liter displacement and 320 hp.
  • Design: The design differed from the classic 911 shape and featured headlights integrated into the fenders (later replaced by clear-glass headlights).
  • Interior: The interior was fundamentally modernized to increase comfort and everyday usability . The repositioned instruments with a digital speedometer were particularly striking.
