The rubber mounts on the steering gear become porous over time. This results in (not visible) axial play of the steering gear within the fastening brackets. The result is spongy steering and unsteady straight-line stability. With new rubber mounts for the steering gear, you can achieve a surprisingly noticeably improved steering performance with little effort.
