Technical data

The third Boxster generation was the 981 generation. Changes from the Boxter 987 included a body that was 17 percent lighter, thanks to the increased use of aluminum and the strategic use of high-strength steel in key areas. This kept the curb weight at around 3,000 pounds, even though the car was larger than its predecessor.

Engine and prices

The 981 Boxster was powered by the MA1 flat engine, with the displacement of the base engine reduced by 200 cc to 2.7 liters, but this was more than made up for by replacing the intake manifold injection of the base 987.2 engine with DFI. the Boxster S was powered by the existing 3.4-liter engine. Both engines are equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission and an optional revised 7-speed PDK. Both manual and automatic models were available with a variety of technical options, including Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) and a Sport Chrono package. The optional "Sport Chrono" package added dynamic transmission mounts that functioned similarly to the optional magnetizable mounts used on the rear-engine side of the 991. The 981's chassis and suspension were similar to those of the Porsche 911, with a 60 mm longer wheelbase and 36-48 mm increased front track, depending on the offset of the front wheels. The front suspension geometry was revised to increase resistance to dive under braking. The rear suspension exhibited much greater resistance to dynamic track changes than that of the 987. The range was expanded in March 2014 to include the 2015 model year GTS. It received slightly modified front and rear bumpers, black GTS paint and 15 hp more power from the 3.4-liter engine. Production of the Boxter took place exclusively in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen until 2012, and since 2012 also at the Karman plant in Osnabrück. The starting price was 49,200€ and 60,200€ for the Boxter S.
