These radial shaft seals are for sealing the wheel bearings on the Porsche rear axle. Wheel bearings on vehicles are the central rolling bearings that guide the wheel over the wheel hub in the wheel carrier. In older vehicles, these are often pairs of bearings; newer models usually only have a double-row angular contact ball bearing. In the past, open roller bearings with separate shaft seals were also used, as on the 911 F model or the 930. Thanks to "functional integration", these have now been replaced by bearings lubricated for life. If a wheel bearing is defective, this is usually noticeable through "humming" noises when cornering.
