This radial shaft seal is for sealing the wheel bearings on the Porsche rear axle. Wheel bearings are the central roller bearings on vehicles that guide the wheel over the wheel hub in the wheel carrier. In old vehicles there are often pairs of bearings, newer models usually only have a double row angular contact ball bearing. In the past, like on the 911 F model, open roller bearings with separate shaft seals were used. Thanks to “functional integration”, these have now been replaced by bearings lubricated for life. If a wheel bearing is defective, this is usually noticeable through "thumping" noises when cornering. The vigorous shaking of the wheel can also provide information about the condition of the wheel bearings.
