A distinction is made between magnesium housings (die casting process) and aluminum housings (gravity die casting). Up to and including model year 1968, the gearboxes were only built with aluminum housings and thus using the permanent mold casting process. In model year 1969 (from gearbox type 901.06), the alloys and the manufacturing process were changed to die casting. The changeover was carried out equally on the 901 and 902 gearboxes. The 911s with 2.2L already had the magnesium housing (die-cast), regardless of whether 4-speed (911.00 in the 911T) or 5-speed (911.01 in the 911E/911S).
