The Porsche 914 was produced with just under 120 000 units produced from 1969 to 1976. In total, over 115,000 examples were produced with a 1.7-liter four-cylinder boxer engine and only about 3,500 had the 2.0-liter six-cylinder boxer engine.

VW was looking for an inexpensive sports car to replace the Karmann Ghia, so Porsche pledged its expertise and worked with VW to develop the 914. The model, which was to be sold separately as a VW and a Porsche variant, thus represented a composite of VW's production and Porsche's development work. However, the price and marketing concept failed with the death of VW boss Heinrich Nordhoff, so as a compromise the "VW-Porsche Vertriebs GmbH" was founded in 1969. From a marketing point of view, this decision was not optimal, because this combination was given the name "Volksporsche" or "VoPo" as a mockery, which was the abbreviation for the GDR People's Police. Subsequently, the 914 was sold as the "VW-Porsche" in Europe, with the four-cylinder-engine models being manufactured by Volkswagen and the six-cylinder models by Porsche. This classification can also be officially recognized by the manufacturing numbers of the vehicles.

Engine and prices

The Porsche 914 with the four-cylinder engine, which was already installed in the VW 411 E, had an output of 80 hp and reached a top speed of 177 km/h. The six-cylinder variant, which shared the engine with the 911 T, could boast 110 hp and a maximum speed of 201 km/h. While the more powerful model cost just under DM 20,000 at launch, the 914/4 was more than DM 7,000 cheaper at around DM 12,250. For the reason that Targa models of the Porsche 911 T with a more powerful output of 125 hp cost only marginally more than the 914/6, only just under 2,600 buyers opted for the six-cylinder model of the VW Porsche. As a result, production of the model was completely discontinued after sales plummeted in 1971 and 1972.

The 914 was improved throughout its production period, so in the 1973 model year some weak points were eliminated. Among other things, the gearshift, which was perceived as hooky, and the rigid passenger seat were improved. Furthermore, in return for the discontinuation of the six-cylinder model, the displacement of the four-cylinder was increased to 2.0 liters, which henceforth produced 100 hp and achieved similar driving performance to the 40 kg heavier 914/6. The price development for the 914 is increasing, which is why a purchase consultation is currently recommended. The 914/8 is also currently in high demand.
