The second generation Porsche Boxster, which was known as the 987, is a roadster like the first generation and was introduced at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show and launched in the 2005 model year. The five-speed manual transmission for the base version was no longer from Audi, but from Japanese supplier Aisin; the six-speed transmission for the Boxster S was from Getrag. For the 2009 model year, Porsche introduced the revised 987. The updated Boxster featured a family of all-new engines with new designation and direct fuel injection for the 3.4-liter S versions of the 987.2, and the 2.9-liter engine replaced the older 2.7-liter engine and produced 10 more horsepower. The base 2.9-liter 987.2 had intake manifold fuel injection. The other big change for the 987.2 was the replacement of the optional Tiptronic automatic transmission with torque converter with an automated dual-clutch transmission, which Porsche christened PDK. It was mated to a 6-speed manual transmission as standard, with a 7-speed PDK automatic available as an option. The Chrono package included the Launch Control system, which allowed the 2002 Boxster to accelerate 0.1 seconds faster from 0-100 km/h compared to the normal PDK version without the Chrono package. To improve handling, the Boxster was equipped with Porsche Stability Management as standard.

There was a choice of all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive, manual transmission or a PDK dual-clutch transmission, as well as a Coupe, Cabriolet and a Targa.
