Description:
Basically, 2 different brake cylinders were installed in Porsche 996 and 986. One fits both all 996 until the 1999 model year and from model year 2000 for 996 without PSM (Porsche Stability Management) as well as for all Boxsters up to the 2000 model year and from model year 2001 for all Boxster 986 without PSM. The other brake cylinder variant fits for all Porsche 996 from model year 2000 with PSM and all Boxster 986 with PSM from model year 2001.

The main brake cylinder is the central starting point of a hydraulic operating brake because it generates the necessary braking pressure. A defective main brake cylinder should therefore be replaced immediately. A defective main brake cylinder leads to a significant loss of braking performance, since usually only two instead of four wheels are braked. If you suspect a defective main brake cylinder, you should never continue, but should replace the cylinder immediately.
