The second generation Porsche Boxster, which was known as the 987, is a roadster like the first generation and was introduced at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show and launched in the 2005 model year. It had almost the same design as the first version of the car. It also shared many components with the 997-generation 911, which was launched the same year. The design of the second-generation Boxster featured a distinctive front end with different triangular headlights and a unique front apron. The front air intakes were redesigned, as were the rear bumper and brake lights.

Engine and prices

The base 2.7-liter engine of the 987 Boxster and the 3.2-liter engine of the Boxster S were largely carried over from the late 986, but the elimination of the cast-iron bearing shells resulted in a weight savings of 12 pounds. Output from the standard 2.7-liter Boxer engine increased from 228 hp to 237 hp, while the Boxster S's 3.2-liter engine increased from 260 hp to 276 hp. The entry price in 2005 was €43,333.00 In the 2006 model year, Porsche installed a larger ball bearing for the intermediate shaft bearing on the flywheel side, largely eliminating the infamous intermediate shaft bearing problems that plagued the M96 series. The 2007 Boxster received engine updates that matched those of the hardtop Cayman. These included the VarioCam Plus two-stage intake valve lift for both the base and S versions, boosting output to 245 hp. The five-speed manual transmission for the base version was no longer from Audi, but from Japanese supplier Aisin; the six-speed transmission for the Boxster S was from Getrag. For the 2009 model year, Porsche introduced the revised 987. The updated Boxster featured a family of all-new engines with new designation and direct fuel injection for the 3.4-liter S versions of the 987.2, and the 2.9-liter engine replaced the older 2.7-liter engine and produced 10 more horsepower. The base 2.9-liter 987.2 had intake manifold fuel injection. The other big change for the 987.2 was the replacement of the optional Tiptronic automatic transmission with torque converter with an automated dual-clutch transmission, which Porsche christened PDK. It was mated to a 6-speed manual transmission as standard, with a 7-speed PDK automatic available as an option. The Chrono package included the Launch Control system, which allowed the 2002 Boxster to accelerate 0.1 seconds faster from 0-100 km/h compared to the normal PDK version without the Chrono package. To improve handling, the Boxster was equipped with Porsche Stability Management as standard.

There was a choice of all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive, manual transmission or a PDK dual-clutch transmission, as well as a Coupe, Cabriolet and a Targa. With the 991, Porsche was able to perform the balancing act between driving pleasure and everyday life better than ever before thanks to technological advances, especially in electronics and controls, yet it was still possible to save weight on the newest member of the 911 family and show that there was no need to compromise on driving pleasure.
