In the past, open roller bearings with separate shaft seals were also used. Thanks to “functional integration”, these have now been replaced by bearings lubricated for life. If a wheel bearing is defective, this is usually noticeable through "thumping" noises when cornering. The vigorous shaking of the wheel can also provide information about the condition of the wheel bearings.
